Morning: the main square and Špalíček

Morning: the main square and Špalíček

Start at Krále Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, a few minutes' walk from the guesthouse. Its symbol is Špalíček – a group of medieval merchants' houses in the middle of the square, divided by the narrow Kramářská lane. Walk through it; it is the most photographed spot in town.

The Cheb Museum is also on the square. It is housed in the building where Duke Albrecht von Wallenstein was murdered in 1634, and his last days are among the best-known parts of the exhibition. Allow about an hour for the museum.

Midday: Cheb Castle

The castle is a short walk from the square. Cheb Castle is an imperial palace built by Frederick Barbarossa – no other building of this kind has survived in the Czech Republic.

Don't miss two things here. The Black Tower is built of dark volcanic stone from the nearby Komorní hůrka, and from the top there is a view over the whole town and the Ohře valley. The double chapel is a two-storey Romanesque-Gothic chapel, one of the most valuable buildings of its kind in Central Europe.

Allow an hour to an hour and a half for the castle. Check the opening hours of the castle and the museum on their websites in advance – outside the main season they are usually shorter, and in winter they may be closed.

Afternoon: to the river and Krajinka park

Afternoon: to the river and Krajinka park

From the castle, walk down below the town walls to the Ohře river. Krajinka park stretches along it – flat paths for walking and cycling, playgrounds for children and benches by the water. It is the nicest place in town for an afternoon rest, and in summer concerts and other events are held here.

On the way back you can stop in the lanes around the square, where you will find cafés and pastry shops.

Evening

Restaurants are around the square. If you don't feel like going out, buy some food at a nearby shop and spend the evening on our terrace with a barbecue grill and a large parasol, or in the common room.
